The drive up Hwy 191/189 to Jackson Hole is beautiful, with great views of the Wyoming Range and the Sawtooth section of the Gros Ventre Mountains. You will cross the historic Green River at Warren Bridge and then follow in the footsteps of the Astorians, early explorers who camped along this route on their way to the Pacific in October of 1811. You will travel over the Hoback Rim and down to the Hoback River, a great fly fishing stream. The community of Bondurant offers small cafes, a lodge and guest ranch, as well as St. Hubert the Hunter Church, a log icon listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At mile marker 150 you’ll see the turn off for Cliff Creek Falls to your left and at MM 152 the turn for Granite Hot Springs on your right. The Hot Springs is open year round, with access via snowmobile, skis or dog sled in the winter.
At Hoback Junction you will stay right and head north. You’ll follow the Snake River into the town of Jackson. Jackson Hole is the name of the geographical area and of the ski area. A “hole” is the term used by early mountain men to describe a high mountain valley surrounded by peaks.
